Double Dipping: College and Department Restrictions

There is no University-wide policy prohibiting the double use of courses, other than the General Education Committee's policy limiting double-dipping between General Education and the major and/or minor. However, some colleges and departments do not allow double-dipping between their major and a second major, between their major and a minor, between their minor and a major, or between their minor and a second minor.

The following colleges and departments ask advisors to honor their restrictions when making course adjustments in majors/minors and when approving students' degree programs--even if the advisor's home department/college does not prohibit double use of their courses.

Colleges That Restrict Double-Dipping


College of Agriculture and Life Sciences—double use of courses varies by department. Students should see their department advisors for information regarding double-dipping restrictions on major and minor requirements.

College of Education—Special Education & Rehabilitation Program does not permit courses used in the Rehab and Deaf Studies Options to be used elsewhere in the same degree program.

College of Fine Arts—does not permit double use of courses in one major with another major (within Fine Arts or outside of the college), nor double use of courses in a minor with any major or second minor.

College of Humanities Departments:

  • Classics—does not permit double use of courses in one of their majors (Classical Civilization, Greek, Latin) with another major (within Humanities or outside of the college), nor double use of courses in one of their minors (Classics, Greek, Latin) with any major or second minor.
  • English and Creative Writing—do not permit double use of courses in these majors with another major or minor, nor double use of courses in these minors with any other majors or second minors. Exceptions: (1) Second degree students MAY use English courses from the first Creative Writing or English degree towards an ENGL or CRTV minor in the second degree;(2) Students with a double major in English and Creative Writing may double count 9 units between the two majors.

Eller College of Management—does not permit double use of courses in their majors with majors or minors outside of the college, nor double use of courses in their minors with majors outside of the college. Unique units are required for the student's major and minor. One exception: Students who complete a second degree MAY use courses from their first degree (from the Eller College major) in the GBUS minor for their second degree from another college.

College of Medicine, Physiology Program—does not permit double use of courses in the major with a minor. Courses used in the major MAY be applied toward a second major.

College of Science Departments:

  • Ecology & Evolutionary Biology—does not permit double use of upper-division courses in their major (BIOL, ECOL, GBIO) with a minor; will allow departmental core courses (MCB 181 R/L, ECOL 182, 302, 320, 335) ONLY in their major to be used with another major.
  • Mathematics—does not allow double use of courses in their major with a minor; requires a set of distinct courses for a minor; permits double use of courses between their major and another major.
  • Molecular & Cellular Biology—does not permit double use of courses in their major with a minor; will allow courses in their major to be used with another major.

College of Social & Behavioral Sciences Departments:

  • Communication—does not permit double use of courses in its major with another major or minor, nor double use of courses in its minor with any other majors or second minors (within SBS or outside of the college).
  • Economics—students may complete one of the following: ECON 200; ECON 201A & B; ECON 210. If more than one of these options is completed (at the UA or at another institution), the corresponding number of units will NOT count toward the student's UA degree. These courses CANNOT be used for both the Economics major and the GBUS minor (see the College of Management note).
  • Geography/Regional Development—does not permit the double use of GEOG 220, 230, or 240 between the major and Tier 2 Natural Science requirement (Note:  this restriction is a reiteration of the General Education Policy on double use of courses).
  • History—does not permit double use of courses in their major with another major or with a minor.
  • Judaic Studies—does not permit double use of courses in its major with another major or minor, nor double use of courses in its minor with any other majors or second minors (within SBS or outside of the college).
  • Latin American Studies—does not permit double use of courses in its major with another major or minor, nor double use of courses in its minor with any other majors or second minors (within SBS or outside of the college).
  • Linguistics—does not permit double use of courses in their major with another major or minor, nor double use of courses in their minor with any other majors or second minors (within SBS or outside of the college).
  • Mexican American Studies—does not permit double use of courses in its major with another major or minor, nor double use of courses in its minor with any other majors or second minors (within SBS or outside of the college).
  • Philosophy—does not permit double use of courses in its major with another major or minor, nor double use of courses in its minor with another major or second minor (within SBS or outside of the college).
  • Political Science—does not permit double use of courses in its major with another major, IDST subject area, or minor, nor double use of courses in its minor with any other majors, IDST subject area, or second minors (within SBS or outside of the college). Effective in Fall 2004, this policy applies to double degrees as well.
  • Psychology—does not permit double use of courses in its major with another major or minor, nor double use of courses in its minor with any other majors or second minors (within SBS or outside of the college). Exception: Second degree students MAY use Psychology courses from their first degree (PSYC major) towards a PSYC minor in the second degree.
  • Sociology—does not permit double use of courses in its major with another major or minor, nor double use of courses in its minor with any other majors or second minors (within SBS or outside of the college).
  • Women's Studies—does not permit double use of courses between its major and a minor; double dipping is allowed between double majors or between majors in two degrees.

University College—does not permit double use of courses in the Interdisciplinary Studies Major (3 subject areas) with a second major or a minor.

  • Prelaw Thematic Minor—does not permit double use of courses used in the minor with a foundations course, a major, or a second minor.
