GENERAL EDUCATION

GENERAL EDUCATION

General Education requirements for catalog years 1998 to Fall 2021 follow a University-wide structure common across all colleges. All degree-seeking undergraduate students must satisfy Foundations requirements (Math, English Composition, and Second Language), Tier I, Tier II and Diversity Emphasis.

General Education Requirements Spring 2022 and beyond also include Foundations requirements, University 101 and University 301, Exploring Perspectives, and Building Connections.

FOUNDATIONS REQUIREMENTS

Foundations requirements include First-year Composition, Mathematics and Second Language. Foundation course requirements vary depending upon degree program and catalog year.

TRANSFER COURSES FOR GENERAL EDUCATION

Guidelines have been established regarding the application of transfer courses, including AP, IB and CLEP credits, to General Education requirements.

SUBSTITUTIONS FOR GENERAL EDUCATION COURSES

Substitutions will be granted only for extraordinary circumstances, and each college has its own policies and procedures for accepting substitutions.

MULTIPLE USE OF COURSEWORK FOR GENERAL EDUCATION

The use of courses to satisfy more than one requirement in the student's degree program (e.g., fulfilling a major, pre-major, minor, certificate, and/or General Education requirement) is subject to University General Education, college, and department policies on the multiple use of a course.  See the General Education policy below. Check with your major AND minor advisors for clarification on the multiple use of any courses within your primary and secondary degree program and the multiple use of any courses between two degree programs.

GENERAL EDUCATION FOR CATALOGS 1997 AND EARLIER

General Education requirements for the 1997 and earlier catalogs varied across colleges and departments. For college-specific general education requirements and courses, view the 1997-1998 Academic Program Requirements Reports (APRR's) for the degree program.
